Be Prepared For Social Change
Be Prepared For Social ChangeWe are now in a time of the most intense and effective social issues we have ever faced. It is an issue of the utmost importance for many reasons, but the outcome may be quite clear: we can either change or stay the same. I was reminded of this recently when discussing the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It was on a recent trip to India that I read this book, and I came away with a very powerful sense of the possibilities for change.Written by Sherman Alexie, this book is an honest account of life as an Indian American immigrant in California. As a Californian, I can tell you that there are really only two issues you should be discussing with your fellow citizens: the economy and health care. Neither of these are going to be resolved anytime soon.Since America is founded on a system of capitalism and freedom, we must move forward in it or face the consequences of a failure of our American society. The outcomes of both are global, an d we must either change ourselves or watch as our leadership in the world moves backwards. As the Chief Executive of a business in America, my job is to lead by example. I am responsible for the success of my company, and it is my responsibility to take the steps necessary to foster the best results. What I have come to realize as an entrepreneur is that when it comes to social change, you must create the change yourself or allow others to do it for you.In the social issue of the day, we cannot allow others to dictate our actions. The only way you can move ahead is by taking the initiative. By creating the movement that will be supported by more than just your staff, you will be able to effectively advocate for a change without fear of political correctness. If you take the issue of creating solutions or even deciding what to focus on, on your own, you will have a greater influence than you will have if you go out and do fundraisers for issues that have already been decided upon. You must decide what issues are meaningful to you and your team and become the catalyst for the solutions that will address your issues. There is a global need for change, and it has to come from you. While some may argue that economic issues are far too important to take the necessary action on, you cannot afford to stay where you are. The opportunity for you to make a significant difference in the lives of others is a force that cannot be ignored. And this is the reason why you must leave your comfort zone of being an employee in America and become a social entrepreneur. The problem is that there are far too many people who want to hold back change, and they need to be challenged for their beliefs.
